Danner: Pandemic Is Nowhere Near Over

Overton County Executive Ben Danner said the numbers show the pandemic is nowhere near over, despite the desire to get back to normal.

He said as of Friday, Overton ranks 52nd out of 95 counties in COVID-19 cases.

“I don’t think the virus itself is going away,” Danner said. “The longer it goes on, I think people are probably tired of hearing about it and thinking about it and everybody is kinda trying to put it behind them and just go do like we used to do. I promise you we’re not to that point yet.”

Danner said people should take precautions as if everyone has the virus since some do not know until they are tested. He emphasized wearing a mask, frequent hand washing, and maintaining social distance.

The Health Department reported COVID numbers tripling across the county in recent weeks. Danner said he is concerned for the health of county residents.

“Just think of not only yourself and your kids, but your parents and grandparents,” Danner said. “I mean I worry about the kids, and most of them probably, if they do have it, will probably be alright with it by the numbers is what they’re showing. But if they give it to parents and grandparents who knows how they-because, you know, most of us have been around someone that had it.”

As of Friday there are 316 active cases of COVID-19 across Overton County.
