Daily Reading Is Key To Child Development

While teaching remains outside the classroom, one of the most important roles parents can play in education is reading.

White County Library Director Cathy Farley said parents should make a set schedule and choose books that are on the same level as the child.

“The biggest thing to help parents is to be consistent,” Farley said. “Make reading a time of the day whether it is bed time or first thing in the morning. Make it an activity you do daily.”

Farley said reading not only helps in comprehensions skills, but also helps in math, science and social studies.

“If you read consistently, your scores will go up across the board,” Farley said. “It is important to read to be a success at everything.”

Children need to be proficient in reading by third grade. That’s why the Imagination Library begins sending books to children early. Founder Dolly Parton has been reading stories to students since the COVID-19 outbreak began. Farley said to start reading to children as soon as possible.

“They want to learn when they are young,” Farley said. “If you catch them when they are young, it makes reading a whole lot easier, but is there a magical age to stop reading? No.”
