Cumberland Habitat Takes State Honors

Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity walked away with two state honors, a celebration of the volunteers who make the work possible.

The organization honored with the Outstanding Community Partner of the Year Award, for its work with TCAT Upper Cumberland. Pastor Tim Chesson also honored with the Outstanding Leadership Volunteer Award. Cumberland County Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Vanessa Petty said the honors show the community’s commitment.

“When they get excited about the work that we’re doing and they just continue to just spread the word about all the great work, and the people that we’re helping, and they get to be part of that and it just gets others involved and others excited so we were just blessed to have them,” Petty said.

Habitat for Humanity works with volunteers and local communities to provide people with affordable housing.

“We are a mostly volunteer led organization and so our construction site has one paid person, and the rest are volunteers so we rely heavily on groups, groups like TCAT, churches that come alongside,” Petty said. “So it was just a blessing to be a part of that and be able to honor them in that and of course Habitat for Humanity here in Cumberland County as well.”

Chesson is a board member at the non-profit and is involved in the church relation committee. Petty said he helps other churches get involved in their mission. Petty said TCAT Upper Cumberland brings classes to volunteer for the day and uses their time with Habitat as a training opportunity.

Habitat for Humanity operates in all 50 states and more than 70 countries worldwide.
