Cumberland Hopeful Work Will Begin On Motorsports And Entertainment Complex Early 2022

Cumberland County is hopeful for an early 2022 groundbreaking on the new motorsports and entertainment complex.

County commissioners heard from Flatrock USA, the developers of the 775-acre project this week. Mayor Allen Foster said it will be home to a motorsports track, hotel and lodge, winery, brewery and events center among others.

“If they’re able to do everything in their plans, I’ve said it’s a regional attraction, and I don’t mean just regional to our state I mean regional southeast,” Foster said. “It’s a really big endeavor they’re undertaking and it’s going to be one of the best tracks in the U.S. and likely the world.”

Foster said that the development group said that the work will be completed in stages. He said that the first phase will be for the motorsports track.

Foster said that Flatrock presented the commission with various plans for the project at a work session. He said that the complex will have the capability to house a variety of activities.

“There’s an extended track that’s going to be about six miles but they can actually break that into I believe it was eight different configurations of different sizes of tracks from Grand Prix to all different kinds of races,” Foster said. “And they believe they can actually hold two different events at once if they segment the track out but there’s a lot more than that. They’re looking at an automotive innovation center where people can come in and do development of different ideas, driving experiences in a safety center. (…) They’re looking to make it a true destination.”

Foster said that the work to be done is a completely private venture with no cost to the county.
