Cumberland County Seeking To Fill Property Assessor Vacancy By July

Cumberland County is searching for a new Assessor of Property after their previous property assessor passed away last month.

County Mayor Allen Foster said they are looking for a good citizen who will stand up and work with the community.

“The qualifications are basically the same for other county officers,” Foster said. “You have to be eighteen years old, and you have to prove your residency.”

The property assessor is who helps decide the value of the county properties.

“Which ultimately is how we’re charged property taxes is based upon those values,” said Foster.

Foster said the county commission will appoint someone to serve as the assessor until August election of next year, when the term ends. That person can then decide if they want to run for re-election.

The County Mayor’s office is accepting applications until Thursday, July 8th at noon. If applicants miss that deadline, they can also apply directly at the county commission meeting on July 19th.

The position for Cumberland County’s Assessor of Property became vacant after the previous assessor, Lori Powell, passed away following a courageous battle with cancer.

Powell had served in the property assessor’s office for 13 years and was elected to her position in August of 2020 after former assessor David Simcox decided not to seek another term.

The deputy property assessor has been serving Cumberland County in the interim.
