Cumberland County High School has officially sold its CTE Construction Class home.
CTE Director Dr. William S. Maddox said that the students who work on the house are upper-level construction students. He said that students typically take about a year to construct the home complete with stud walls and roofing.
“It’s a lot of work put into it,” Maddox said. “And it takes quite some time so they spend quite a lot of hours out there. And you’re talking in inclement weather and they’re out in the field just like they would be with any construction crew. And they have to bear the elements when it’s permitted. So they’re very proud of what they do.”
Maddox said that the house sold for some $42,531. He said that they come up with the minimum bid based on construction costs plus about $500 for the advertisement cost.
Maddox said that through career technical education, students can gain life skills that will carry them outside of the classroom.
“It’s those kinds of things that are important,” Maddox said. “It’s not just about the books and the classroom, it’s about the hands-on learning that we’re offering. So kudos to the teachers in CTE department, and to the high school teachers as a whole.”
