The Cumberland County Film Society holding a membership drive through the month of January.
The Cumberland County Film Society screens movies exclusively for members in the spring and fall at the Cumberland County Playhouse. The movies are selected by a board of judges appointed by the group. President Cheryl LaSalle said the organization provides film buffs with a unique opportunity.
“We have documentaries, foreign films, domestic movies that are relatively new, ones that you probably wouldn’t normally see at the major theaters,” LaSalle said. “They are very unique.”
A yearly membership fee of $15 is required to become a member. The society screens five movies per season.
“For that you get to go see ten movies, which is a pretty good bargain,” LaSalle said. “As I stated before, the uniqueness of the movies we show really is a factor. I know you can stream a lot of movies online, but we show them at the Cumberland County Playhouse since Rocky Top closed, so you have the benefit on seeing them on the big screen and that makes a big difference.”
LaSalle said the group’s reputation is what attracts new members.
“The word gets around about the kind of movies that we show,” LaSalle said. “We also have a lending library. We keep all of our DVDs from the past. There are tons of movies in the library and members can check them out and view them at home.”
LaSalle said the group is already preparing for the spring season. She said judges are already narrowing down films to be screened. The first movie will be shown in early March, exact dates to be determined. To join reach out to the CCFS on their website.
