The Cumberland County Board of Education may soon change its lice policy.
Current policy keeps students at home if lice or nits are found and the students must stay out of school until they become totally lice free.
To reduce chronic absenteeism, the board may consider a new policy that would send kids home only if live lice is found. Students who have nits would be able to return to school since the CDC considers lice a nuisance and not a health hazard.
The board’s policy committee will study the matter at a future meeting before sending any recommendation to the full board of education.
