Crossville’s second annual Field of Honor display continues all week to pay respect to Cumberland County veterans.
The display will be up through Veteran’s Day. It features a field of 700 flags, each one purchased by someone in the area and dedicated to an American veteran. Organizing Committee Chair Jean Smith said it is an event that the whole community enjoys.
“The community is so responsive,” Smith said. “We love our veterans, and Cumberland County has one of the highest percentages of veterans in the state of Tennessee, so we have lots of veterans and lots of people here that love and support the veterans.”
Smith said there will also be an event on Tuesday where all the schools in Cumberland County will come together with their bands and choirs to perform. The event will also feature a reading from local high schooler Molly Neal of her national award-winning essay on what the flag stands for.
“We do it at this time in November, that’s when we did it last year too, as closely to Veterans Day as we can,” Smith said.
Smith said proceeds from the field will go towards the Cumberland County Veterans Assistance Council, as well as the local Marine Corps League and other veteran organizations.
Smith said there will be a program on the last day of the exhibit featuring patriotic music, the firing of an old cannon, and speakers ranging from the mayor to congressmen.
“It’s just all in honor of the veterans and the flags that represent those that have served and sacrificed,” Smith said.
