Crossville Traffic Stop Leads to Chase, Stand-Off With Police

A Crossville woman faces charges after leading police on a chase that resulted in a stand-off with SWAT members.

Crossville Police report 54-year-old Susan Stokes was pulled over along Miller Avenue and South Main Street  Saturday morning for a faulty headlight.

A background check revealed Stokes had an outstanding warrant. According to the arrest report, Stokes refused to turn the car off, told police she was going home, and fled the scene.

The officer pursued the vehicle as Stokes passed multiple vehicles at speeds over 100 mph. Stokes later turned onto Davidson Court where she fled on foot into her residence.

According to the report, Stokes barricaded herself inside the residence and told officers she had a firearm. Stokes told police via phone that she would not come out without a paper signed by a judge stating she would get bond and serve no jail time.

SWAT members were called to the scene and administered tear gas before Stokes surrendered herself to police. Stokes was taken to Cumberland Medical Center for minor injuries and a mental evaluation.

Stokes faces two counts of evading arrest and one count of reckless endangerment.
