Friends of the Trails (FOT) can move forward with building a walking trail along the Little Obed River.
FOT President John Conrad said the Crossville City Council has approved an agreement for the project.
“It’s for permission to build the trail on a piece of private property,” Conrad said. “Basically, the city council said they were in partnership with Friends of the Trails. If Friends of the Trails builds the trail on that piece of property, the city will take it over for future liability.”
Conrad said the new trail will hopefully be part of a network of walking areas surrounding Crossville.
“We’ve termed it the Crossville Greenway. It’s not a formal plan, but a vision for Crossville,” Conrad said. “It’s building trails along the Little Obed River and the Obed River as much as we can in a full circle around the city.”
Volunteers have already constructed more than two miles of trail along the Little Obed River.
“We’re doing it piecemeal. Some of the property is city-owned and they’ve given us permission to build the trail. Now, we’ve built as much as we can on city property and it’s getting into private property,” Conrad said. “The city council is very supportive of our efforts and have given me a couple of grants to cover some of the construction costs.”
Conrad hopes the Crossville Greenway will eventually be 10 to 12 miles in length.
