City Manager Greg Wood said the Saturday event runs from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. Wood said different aircraft will be on display for free with $25 vintage plane rides available.
” That is one of the biggest sellers, some people come back year after year,” Wood said. “If you have a younger kid especially, that has never flown at all, without having to go on a chartered aircraft or something. It’s a cost effective way to get out and see some of the local area and go, ‘hey, that’s our house.”
Wood said the Flagship Detroit, the world’s oldest flying DC-3, will be one of the aircraft. Wood said the Army is also bringing a Blackhawk helicopter.
“We’ll also have several vintage fighter aircraft,” Wood said. “A P-51, T-6 T-28, among other aircraft. So we’ll have food vendors, we’ll have bounce houses and slides for the kids, just a great family event with this great weather.”
Wood said aviation has played a large role in the history of Crossville. The memorial airport dates back to 1934 and even a Blue Angel pilot that attended school in Cumberland County. Wood said last year’s event was cancelled, so people are excited to come back.
“There’s an opportunity to come out, learn a little bit about flying, see some aircraft that you’ve probably never seen before,” Wood said. “You have an opportunity to take a flight on a vintage aircraft or on a small aircraft to see the sights from about 5,000 feet.”
The Crossville Memorial Airport is located at 2409 Sparta Highway.
