Crossville Counterfeit Scheme Slowed

Crossville Police and the Cumberland County Sheriffs Department are looking for at least two people as part of a mobile counterfeiting and theft operation.

Three people arrested Wednesday after passing at least 27 counterfeit fifty-dollar bills at approximately 15 Cumberland County business. Officers recovered some $3,000 in cash and at least 30 additional counterfeit bills. Officers also recovered equipment used to make the money.

A juvenile is being held from the Wednesday stop, but has not been charged.

A business worker was able to get a vehicle description and tag number of a red rental car with Michigan tags. Police stopped the four on Lantana Road.

Investigators believe they had worked other local counties over the past few days. At least six people are believed to be involved, going to businesses to buy merchandise and getting change. Merchants at the Crossville Outlet Mall and Woodmere Mall were both impacted.

The departments continue to search for a Grey SUV with at least one black male and black female inside. They are believed to be from Charleston, SC.

The US Secret Service has also joined the investigation.
