Crossville City Council Discusses Preliminary Design Concepts For Indoor Rec Center

Crossville’s contracted design group will use Tuesday’s work session to better refine the design for the proposed indoor recreation facility.

Crossville City Council went over four potential options to move forward with. Upland Design Group Architect Kim Chamberlin said all four options include a gym, indoor pool, a fitness component and an indoor track

“We’re going to try to begin the process of showing four different schemes, what the building could be,” Chamberlin said. “Hopefully before we’re done in this process today we’d like to get your input on what you think of what we’re showing you so we can begin to get a feel of what you think your thoughts are, what your concepts, what your ideas might be about the building.”

Architect Eliel Alfon went over each of the four design schemes. He presented ideas for different configurations of the elements. They also discussed the potential for add-ons such as an outdoor pool to explore in the future.

Architect Gavin Myers said they want this facility to serve as a multigenerational building. He said not only do they want the building to last for many decades to come, they want the rec center to have something for everyone.

“To attract not just an individual but the family, that is important that a dad can do exercise while waiting for a daughter swimming or a son playing basketball or what have you, and the grandparents doing water aerobics and so forth,” Myers said. “It is a family kind of (building) the more diverse, the more you bring.”

Myers said they also want to create a design that is efficient for the city, especially when it comes to staffing as recurring costs. He said they can explore different building options to cut down on staffing needs.

Chamberlin said the ballpark timeline to construct each of the concepts is around 18 to 20 months. He said the next steps will be touching base with a construction manager to get a better idea of the way the market is operating right now.

Chamberlin said they would like to return in July with an even more refined idea of what the rec center will look like based on conversations from Tuesday’s meeting.
