Crossville Budget Includes Water Expansion, Airport Improvements

Crossville will look to address expansion and improvement projects in the city’s 2019-2020 fiscal year budget.

City Manager Greg Wood said the greatest expense will be expanding utilities ahead of a larger TDOT project on Highway 127.

“The big projects are going to be under water and sewer, where the state is doing the ‘four-laning’ of 127 North,” Wood said, “and that’s going to cost us somewhere in the neighborhood of $3 million to move water and sewer lines and put a new water tank up there. That will be our big expenditure for the next couple of years.”

Wood said the city will also look into expanding services and bringing more attention to the Crossville Memorial Airport.

“We’re looking at bringing in a new manager and we’re trying to do more activities at the Airport,” Wood said. “We’re home of Trade-A-Plane, which is an internationally-known aircraft publication, and we really need to capitalize on that. Some of the other features – the golf capital and the Playhouse – we could do fly-in packages like that. We just need to put that on the map and let people know some of the other features here in Crossville.”

Crossville City Council members meet for approximately two hours Tuesday discussing various aspects of the new budget.

Wood said city officials will continue budget talks with more in-depth discussions.

“We didn’t dig too deeply. We went through all the departments so they had an idea of what was going on in each department,” Wood said. “We’ll probably do a little deeper dive next time around. This was the first time for a couple of the [council members], so we wanted to not overwhelm them on their first [budget] work session.”

City officials will meet again Tuesday at 5 p.m. in City Hall to continue budget discussions.
