The City of Crossville approved its upcoming fiscal year budget last night.
The $20 million budget includes a 59-cent tax rate, which is 4-cents lower than last year’s rate. Prior to voting, council member J.H. Graham made a motion to cut the rate even further, back to 55-cents.
“The unemployment rate right now is less than 4-percent and sales tax collections are the highest they have ever been in the history of the city of Crossville,” Graham said. “I think it’s time that we show the property owners here in Crossville that we are looking out for their best interest in paying bills with sales taxes rather than property taxes.”
The council ultimately voted against the motion because of funding concerns down the road.
