Coyote Mating Season Begins Soon, TWRA Says Keep Pet Safety In Mind

Coyote mating season begins in February and the TWRA says the animals will become more active and possibly more aggressive.

TWRA Wildlife Information Specialist Mimi Barnes said residents should keep a close eye on pets during this time.

“We highly encourage dog owners to keep their pets on leashes or to keep their pets indoors,” Barnes said. “Don’t allow them outside without your protection. Dogs on leashes are far less likely to approach a coyote or be approached by a coyote, so your going to keep your animal more safe in a sense.”

Barnes also recommends removing water sources and trash from your home. She said that will make homes less attractive to coyotes looking for a place to stay.

“Even bird feeders,” Barnes said. “If you see a coyote in your yard, take down your bird feeder for a while. That’s kind of a fast food drive through for wildlife because it’s a quick easy meal.”

If you see one on your property, the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency says to throw rocks, shout and make loud noises to discourage it from coming back.

“The goal isn’t to hurt wildlife, but the goal is to scare it, haze it, and get it moving in an opposite direction,” Barnes said. “We encourage anyone who sees a coyote to look as large as they can and to be as noisy as they can.”
