Upper Cumberland Area Agency on Aging and Disability (UCAAAD) is now offering application assistance with SNAP, formerly known as the Food Stamp Program, for adults 60 and over or individuals with a disability to provide eligible individuals with monthly benefits to buy food. Applicants 60 and over or an individual with a disability can now call the UCAAAD SNAP Benefits Coordinator at (931) 432-4111 for free and confidential application assistance.

Tournament teams – men’s and women’s doubles or mixed doubles – have until Aug. 8 to register. The fee is $20 per person to participant in one event and $5 for an additional event.  Men’s and women’s doubles will be played Aug. 14 from 4-9 p.m., with finals the next day starting at 8 a.m. Mixed doubles will take place Aug. 15, noon-9 p.m.  Two age categories are available: under 50 and over 50. Medals will be awarded to the first, second and third place teams. All participants will receive tournament T-shirts.

The shelter is no longer allowed to have volunteers under 16 years old. 16+ must be accompanied by an adult volunteer! If you are 18 or over you are welcome to volunteer at any time after you complete the volunteer orientation.

Join Putnam County 4-H and learn about making wise consumer choices when you shop. This year you will learn about toothpaste, carry-on luggage, smoothies, and fast foods. This contest is open to youth in grades 6-12 as of January 1. This year the contest and practices will all be held virtually

Cookeville – Suffrage Centennial 1920-2020 Exhibit Presented By the Cookeville History Museum
Grand Opening August 21st

It was a landmark moment in American and Tennessee history – the ratification of the 19th Amendment on Aug. 18, 1920, giving women the right to vote.
Cookeville History Museum is marking that moment 100 years later with the opening of a new exhibit, “Suffrage Centennial 1920-2020,” on Friday. The exhibit will feature traveling displays from the Tennessee State Museum and National Archives. It will also include Putnam County’s own story.
Cookeville History Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.-4 p.m., at 40 E. Broad St. To learn more, call 931-520-5455.

Tennessee residents are allowed to hunt without a license on Saturday, Aug. 22 which coincides with the opening day of squirrel season.
Free Hunting Day is an event the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency annually provides in hopes of increasing interest in hunting. Squirrel hunting is one of Tennessee’s oldest and favorite traditions. The day serves as an excellent opportunity for persons to experience the enjoyment of the sport.
