Upper Cumberland’s Habitat for Humanity 15th annual Cooking on the square will look different this year, renamed “Cooking on the Square: The One Without Gumbo”.
Upper Cumberland Habitat for Humanity Director of Development and Communications Katelyn Steakley said the last week of October the community can visit them virtually to share memories of past Cooking on the Square events and bid on pottery.
“Cancelling the event this year comes in at a time where our need is increasing as a community. We lost a lot of houses obviously, and homes and rentals in the tornado so there has been kind of a housing market crunch of sorts,” Steakley said.
Steakley said every year Cooking on the Square has the same goal. One that Steakley said UCHH does not want to lose, after losing the event.
“We can only serve one family at a time, but we don’t want that to be one less just because we didn’t have an event. I think just to reiterate the fact that Cooking on the Square, every year, builds a home for a family,” Steakley said.
While COVID-19 has forced events all across the Upper Cumberland to cancel this year. Steakley said UCHH did not want to make things worse with this event.
“The event that we know and love just couldn’t happen without being able to congregate and spend time with one another and really have that community interaction that we’re used to at Cooking on the Square,” Steakley said.
To get involved or donate, Steakley said to check in with their Facebook, Instagram and website. There will be a way to donate in-person. However, those details have not been finalized.
