Cookeville’s Cane Creek Park is nearing the one-year anniversary of its dog park.
Director of Leisure Services Rick Woods said he is happy with the park, but there have been some challenges in the first year in particular with heavy use.
“Because of the heavy use and the soils we have there, we have had some difficulty, it gets muddy sometimes because we’ve worn some grass away with the heavy use that it’s had,” Woods said. “So that is a challenge for us, and we’re looking about how to address that.”
Woods said the late and wet winter also contributed to the difficulty. He said there is standing water still in some areas.
Woods said that despite these challenges, the park has still been a positive thing for the community. He said he has seen many people use the park in the first year.
“Some things we have to look at and see how we can improve,” Woods said. “But overall it’s still a very positive asset to the community and to Cane Creek Park, and people seem to be very happy with it.”
Woods said there are no immediate plans for additions to the Dog Park because they are focusing on the things they have noticed that need to be improved. He said that there is a long-term plan to eventually expand.
“We hope to at some point create another dog park in a separate location down the road as time and money allows,” Woods said.
Woods said that he recognizes the need in the community for another dog park, but there is not yet a timeline for when a second one would open.
