Cookeville Water Quality Control Department including funds in next year’s budget to address water and sewer in the Old Salem area of town.
Director Barry Turner said the land south of I-40 near Highway 70 had been annexed over 20 years ago. He said residents had voiced concerns about getting their plans of services addressed during the city’s annual public hearing on annexed territories.
“You know that had sewer problems and then there was concerned the hotel was on a septic system, especially that size of a system,” Turner said. “And you know I think the owners of that land had been at the public hearing just about every year since they had been annexed.”
Turner said they are currently in the design phase of the project. He said they are also looking to address sewer and water extension on Dry Valley Road for residents in that area.
Turner said the department included additional funding in the project for a bore-under project for north of I-40. He said that could help make sewer connections more of a reality in the future.
“Having the capacity to get it onto the treatment plant is still an issue,” Turner said. But we put in the budget for the area south of the interchange there, we put $500,000 in for that, for the Dry Valley Road we put $400,000 in for that, and for the bore-under I-40 we put $300,000 in for that.”
