Members of the Cookeville SWAT and Crisis Negotiation teams managed to rescue a child and prevent a suicide Wednesday night.
Officials said the incident unfolded when officers responded to a possible drug overdose at a home on Terry Avenue.
According to a Cookeville Police press release, when officers arrived on scene an adult female told the officers that an armed, 44-year-old Brian K. Cooper, had threatened to harm himself and that a 4-year-old child was inside the home.
Officials said the officers made entry into the home and encountered Cooper, who retreated into a room and shut the door.
A SWAT team arrived and removed the child from the home and unsuccessfully attempted to negotiate with Cooper.
He was eventually taken into custody and sent to Cookeville Regional Medical Center for a medical evaluation.
Police said charges are pending against Cooper at this time.
