Cookeville Senior Center COVID-19 Closure

Activities for local seniors will be curtailed for the time being as the Cookeville Senior Center closed Tuesday.

Cookeville Senior Center Director Maxine Fraizer said the decision to close was not an easy.

“It was a very difficult decision to make because our senior really count on the programs offered there,” Fraizer said. “We spoke with the local health department, the state health department, the city manager, and the county executive. I consulted with numerous board members and we just decided we have so many people in the building, and it’s very difficult to keep everything sanitized with that many people milling around.”

Fraizer said the closure the will last for at least the next two weeks. Fraizer said she hopes the center can reopen soon since so many seniors rely on the center for activities.

“These seniors count on the exercise classes we have there,” Fraizer said. “We offer so many varieties of exercise that involves a lot of people, along with all the wellness things we do.”

Fraizer said the center also has the needs of senior’s access to food at the forefront of their minds, as seniors will soon be able to pick up boxed lunches at the center.

If you know of an at-risk senior can call the Cookeville Senior Center at 931-526-9318 for information about assistance.
