Cookeville Sees Record-Setting Building Permit Numbers For Month Of May

City of Cookeville set a record high for monthly building permits issued in May.

City Manager James Mills said the city issued approximately 65 permits for single-family dwellings last month. He said this is the most they issued in one month since the city started recording that data.

“So that shows the expansive growth we’re having here and continuing to have,” Mills said. “We also issued several million dollars in commercial permits. So the total permits in construction costs for May was $32,354,000. So a lot of big things happening.”

Mills said that includes 21 single-family detached and 44 single-family attached units. He said that also set a record for the number of attached units.

Mills said the city continues to see a lot of influx from out-of-staters. He said there is a huge housing demand and developers are scrambling to try and meet that demand.

“We have hundreds of lots in the approval process now, and we anticipate even more development over the next several months,” Mills said. “We continue to grow, and we’re continuing to keep our codes inspectors busy.”

Mills said the city has been very fortunate to grow at a rate it can handle of about one to two percent. However, he said if the city continues to see numbers like it did this month it might have to further address infrastructure needs.
