Cookeville Salon Suffers Extensive Damage After Sunday Fire

Fire investigators were in Cookeville Monday morning gathering information from a salon that suffered extensive fire damage Sunday afternoon.

Cookeville Fire Department Battalion Chief Daniel Snyder said the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. No foul play is expected, Snyder said.

“Upon arrival, it was confirmed heavy smoke,” Snyder said. “All of our resources, all of our stations responded. Of course, attempted an initial attack and had heavy fire through the roof probably 30-minutes into the fire.”

Snyder said a passing resident called 9-11 around 6:00 p.m. Sunday when they saw smoke coming from the West 2nd Street business. Snyder said the first crew was on scene just four-minutes after the alert from 9-11.

“There was nobody in the building,” Snyder said. “So that was definitely a good thing for us. They did do a quick initial interior search to make sure there was nobody in there as they were trying to find the fire.”

After some four hours on scene, Snyder said the building suffered heavy fire damage to the roof and extensive water and smoke damage. Snyder said some contents were salvageable, but the salon may be deemed a complete loss.

Snyder said the older building was remolded several times, which caused challenges in identifying where the flames were located.

“A lot of times when that happens, you just can’t find the fire and actually get to it and access it,” Snyder said. “So, we had a little bit of difficulty gaining access to where the fire actually was.”

Snyder said a manned fire apparatus was left on scene through the night as a precaution. Snyder said a small rekindle did occur over that time.
