Cookeville’s Heart of the City Playground will be closed Monday and Tuesday for repairs.
Cookeville Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said the department will be focusing on the shock absorb surface the playground sits on. Wood said the playground is ten years old and the surface has begun to split and crack.
“Over a period of time, you know with weather conditions and the sun and the freezing and the intense heat plus the wear and tear that it gets those surfaces will crack a little bit and they will develop places that need to be patched and repaired,” Woods said.
Woods said the repairs will hopefully remove the potential tripping hazards on the surface. Woods said he expects the playground to reopen on Wednesday.
“It requires us to close the playground so we don’t have any foot traffic there,” Woods said. “Then the repairs that we make will take some time to cure and so we are closing it for two days.”
Woods said they will mix a rubberized material with a glue-like substance to smooth out the damaged areas within the surface. Woods said they are doing the repairs on Monday and Tuesday to avoid closing the playground during the days it is mostly used.
“We try to do it at times when the playground is not most heavily used,” Woods said. “Because school is in session and so you don’t have a lot of kids coming during the weekdays and we avoid doing it right before the weekend.”
