Cookeville Plans To Add 85 Trees Along Tennessee Avenue

Cookeville hopes to use grant funding to plant over 80 trees along Tennessee Avenue.

Public Works Director Greg Brown said the city has already budgeted $2,500 for the project if they receive the grant.

“The grant would pay for 85 trees and one sign that would be installed to acknowledge where the funding came from,” Brown said. “Basically it’ll start on Tennessee Avenue at the intersection of West Broad [Street], and plant them to the south along the east right-of-way there.”

The total project would cost approximately $5,000. The grant through Tennessee’s Department of Agriculture would cover half the cost if Cookeville is approved.

Brown said the additional trees would help make the area more visually appealing.

“It was kind of a short-notice grant. We got it on the Council agenda Thursday night and the very next day was the deadline,” Brown said. “We had everything ready to go and the Council did approve it, so we applied on Friday and we should know something here within the next month or so.”

Brown said the city could still move forward with the project in some capacity if the state does not approve them for the grant.
