Cookeville Planners Reject Images on Electronic Display Boards

The Cookeville Planning Commission rejected a motion Monday allowing images on electronic signage.

Planning Director Jon Ward said the city only allows businesses to show text via on-premise message boards.

“We have lots of people that have on-premise electronic signs that display signs and they’re in violation of the zoning code when they do that,” Ward said. “The city’s going to have to do a better job of enforcing the rule to not allow those images on those on-premise signs.”

According to Ward, images are not allowed to be displayed on on-premise electronic signage.

Cookeville defines an on-premise sign as a digital display located on the business’s property. Electronic display screens such as billboards are allowed to show images and video as long as they are not on the premises.

“The technology has changed so much over time,” Ward said. “Businesses invest in those and have the capability of displaying images, but we only allow on-premise signs to display text.”

Ward said the use of images and videos on electric signage is enforced by the city codes department.
