Cookeville’s Pioneer Day will have a new look on Saturday to keep the event COVID safe.
Cookeville Museums Education Specialist Ashley McKee said that usually pioneer demonstrations would be set up but this year will feature take home activities. McKee said she always enjoys an opportunity to help people learn, when they think they’re just having fun.
“Wood whittling or it’s going to be making pioneer toys that kids can keep and enjoy,” McKee said. “It’s trying to show them how things that they do now started that far back in pioneer time.”
McKee said there will still be a Living History Pioneer Woman greeting visitors and doing short demonstrations. She said this is also the kickoff of the History Hike series that will continue into the fall.
“This one is going to kick us off and this one is a more in-person one. The packets are going to be out front of the museum and our Living History Pioneer Woman is going to be at the door and inside and right around the Pioneer Cabin,” McKee said. “This one is unique in that this one we try and keep it as hands-on as possible but with precautions and trying to keep everyone’s health in mind.”
Pioneer Day will run from 10:30 AM until 2:30 PM on April 10 at the Cookeville History Museum. The museum can be contacted for more info on Pioneer Day and History Hikes.
This event is free to the public.
