Cookeville PD Says Lock Your Car Doors

Cookeville Police officials are urging residents to protect their vehicles from break-ins.

Captain Bobby Anderson said rarely a week goes by where police don’t take a report of a vehicle break-in and sometimes the cases are hard to solve.

“A lot of the property that’s being taken from vehicles don’t have serial numbers or they aren’t traceable,” Anderson said. “Even if we do find a suspect that may have the property in their possession, sometimes it hard to track where it came from.”

Anderson said folks need to make sure they keep their cars locked and if you do keep valuables inside the vehicle, lock them inside the trunk while you’re away from the vehicle.

Anderson also said it’s important that folks never leave keys inside an unattended running vehicle.

“Sometimes we take reports of stolen vehicles where the keys were left in the car or the vehicle was left running,” Anderson said. “Even though it’s convenient to run into the store and come right back out, it only takes just a few seconds for someone to open your car door and get in it.”

The police department recently arrested a man who had stolen a vehicle that was left running and unattended outside a local store.
