Cookeville PD Encouraging Safety First On Halloween

Law enforcement officials are stressing safety as trick-or-treaters get ready to hit the streets this week.

Cookeville Police Captain Bobby Anderson said drivers should use extra caution, especially with rain in the forecast for Thursday.

“Slow down, stay alert, and make sure you’re watching in every direction,” Anderson said. “Just remember that little one are going to be out. They may be distracted from all the attention they may be getting. So make sure you’re paying extra attention on your own and watch out for all the kids in the area.”

Anderson said homeowners can also do their part in helping ghouls and goblins stay safe this Halloween.

“If you’re going to be hosting trick-or-treaters, just make sure that you leave your porch light on. Restrain any outdoor pets that you may have,” Anderson said. “Also, since we are going to have the possibility of rain, try to clear out the wet leaves to keep the children from sliding and falling on sidewalks or the areas they may be walking.”

Anderson said parents should make sure that children carry flashlights and wear reflective clothing.

“If a child is going to be wearing a mask, make sure the eyes are not obstructed in the mask,” Anderson said. “We also encourage children not to trick-or-treat alone and only go to homes with porch lights on.”
