The city of Cookeville cautioning the public of a social media account claiming to be the official Instagram of the city.
The account “thecityofcookeville” has made controversial posts regarding COVID. City Manager James Mills said the city has a good idea who owns the account.
“We’ve had an issue with this same person in the past,” Mills said. “Other organizations here are also having some concerns with the same person. We’ve contacted our attorneys, and we’re prepared to take appropriate actions to hopefully keep this from happening again.”
Mills said the city wants to make it clear that the posts are not affiliated or endorsed by Cookeville. Mills said attorneys are researching what appropriate steps may be necessary.
“We don’t endorse anything stated in that Instagram account,” Mills said. “The city fully supports and encourages everyone to get vaccinated and take appropriate steps to protect themselves from the COVID-19.”
Mills said the city was made aware of the account Thursday. Mills said his office and city council members received calls from the public leading to the discovery.
“We’re really not sure what this person’s agenda is, but it does look like or did look like they were purposely misleading the public to think this was an official account of the city of Cookeville,” Mills said.
The account holder has since updated the page information stating it is not affiliated with Cookeville government.
