Cookeville Moving Away From Park View For New Police Station

Cookeville City Manager Mike Davidson said he’s got an open mind for a new police station property.

The city and Putnam County Board of Education caused some concern among parents when they discussed the city buying the Park View School property and building a new police station there.

“We’re exploring other options, just want to see what else is out there, what other properties are available and this one we’ll be considering Thursday night to do some site analysis, it’s at the corner of Neal and South Maple so we want to take a look at it,” Davidson said.

Davidson said he’ll ask the city council to approve $13,500 to analyze the property.

He said the need for a new police station is serious. The current police station is in the basement of the Cookeville Performing Arts Center.

“The department’s got 73, I think it’s 73 commissioned officers, so we’ve outgrown that location,” Davidson said.

No matter what, a new police station won’t be completed for more than a year. Davidson said it will take architects 9-12 months to create the plans, after a piece of land has been selected and purchased.
