Cookeville Public Works is working on a plan to widen West Stevens Street in an attempt to help with an increase in traffic flow.
Director Greg Brown said the work would facilitate east to west traffic as more people seek other driving routes apart from the main roads.
“To try to distribute the traffic between more roads,” Brown said. “Instead of just having them on Broad, Spring, and Jackson. That’ll add one more route that is a safe road to travel.”
Brown said the city is currently in negotiations with an engineer to start the design on it. He said that hopefully everything will be ready for city council to approve the design contract by August.
Brown said that as of now, they are planning for the first phase.
“This first phase will just be from Willow west to where the improvements were made close to Jackson,” Brown said. ” So we’re not doing the whole Stevens Court, or just the first section of it. So that’s what this contract is if we get it approved in August, that’s what it would involve.”
Brown said that an increase in traffic flow led to the need to look in to such plans.
