Cookeville High School is resurfacing its track and adding a new pole vault pit over fall break.
Athletic Director Steven Robbins said the track was last upgraded about 10 years ago.
“It was time. The track was starting to wear and show its age,” Robbins said. “I have been here. This is my fourth year at Cookeville High School, and you could see it every year getting a little worse.”
With the renovations, the jumping pit will also be moved to the sides of the field giving enough room to add individual locations for other track competitions.
Robbins said fall break was the perfect time to start the project since the track can not be walked on during the process. Cookeville High School’s next home football game is October 16th giving enough time to complete the labor.
“With our home game next Friday against Siegel, they needed to get to a spot where we could at least get the players across the track,” Robbins said. “When I talked to them yesterday that was my concern, and he said no problem. They would have the base layer down and then at least one coating on top of it. I think they put two or three coats on top of that, and then add the color it make it red.”
Track practice usually starts in February with the season beginning the month after.
