Cookeville Holiday Home Challenge Opens Registration

The fourth annual Cookeville Merry and Bright Holiday Home Challenge is taking applications for homes looking to light up the holiday season.

The homes will all be within a 10-mile radius of the courthouse square and once the homes are set a map to tour the lights will be available on the Cookeville Leisure Services website. Leisure Services Recreation Programmer Sally Herren said there are four new categories to enter, including Merry and Bright, Classic Christmas, Holly Jolly and the Griswold Award for those willing to sacrifice their electric bill.

“Holly Jolly would be Santa and reindeer and snowmen, kind of like a Santa’s workshop type feel,” Herren said. “The Griswold Award is outrageously festive and like… lights galore, you would think Christmas Vacation type lights.”

For the other categories, Herren said Merry and Bright would focus on the latest decorating trends. Classic Christmas is a throwback to traditional decorating.

“Wreaths, garlands, clear or gold tinted lights and touches of red or green, you would think Christmases past,” Herren said. “The Merry and Bright would be cheerful, animated light shows, animatronics, technology based decorations.”

Registration is open until November 24 on the Cookeville Leisure Services website. Judging the winners will happen December 1-6.

“It is $100 for the first place winner and $50 for the second place and they all get a sign,” Herren said. “The Griswold award, there is only going to be one first place winner.”

However, there will be a People’s Choice social media contest from December 7-11. This contest has Facebook users “liking” the photo of their favorite holiday home from among all participants.
