Cookeville High Student Investigated After Threat

A potential threat at Cookeville High School is in the hands of law enforcement.

Putnam County Schools Director Jerry Boyd said a student told their parents about the situation after school Wednesday. They contacted law enforcement, who notified the school district.

“Thankfully a student stepped up after overhearing another student make comments about bringing a gun to school and from there and through the investigation, we identified that student and law enforcement took it from there,” Boyd said.

The ninth grade student is being investigated by the Putnam County Sheriff’s Department, he said. In addition to any criminal charges that may result, the student will also face school discipline. Boyd said that process is beginning.

“Things like this we take very seriously and we certainly will follow our steps that could result in suspension/expulsion,” he said.

Boyd said operations in all Putnam County schools were normal Thursday.
