Cookeville High School has started a new tradition with its senior athletes.
“My Jersey, Our Journey” is a new program started by Assistant Principal Michelle Bowman, Counselor Julie Smith, and Football Coach Jimmy Maynord. Bowman said that senior football players will give their jersey to a faculty or staff member who made a positive impact in their lives.
“They feel like they’re just doing their job and the students may not always show it in the moment but when they sit down and think who has made a difference for them,” Bowman said. “When this idea was shared with us we only had two more home games, so out of the two home games that they had these were the employees that they chose to represent them that day.”
Bowman said they got the idea for the tradition from other schools posting a similar program on social media. She said the program is a way to involve faculty, staff, and students in a movement that celebrates positivity and community after a tough year.
“We have asked our faculty and staff members to be very flexible in the last few years with the shutdown and having to try and deliver instruction virtually and last year,”
Bowman said they plan on continuing the tradition with other school sports as well.
