Cookeville Grass Clipping Ordinance Fails

Cookeville’s proposed ordinance concerning grass clippings on the road failed Thursday night.

Council members Eric Walker and Laurin Wheaton recommended the city implement an educational campaign instead of an ordinance. Walker said such an ordinance would risk more lawsuits.

“I’m an avid motorcyclist, I truly understand the hazards and one hundred percent get behind city campaigns to urge its citizens to remove their glass grass clippings from the street,” Walker said. “But I just think this opens up one more avenue, possibly for property owners not to be able to to have a liability out there. And that concerns me.”

Also Thursday night, the council approved the new fiscal year budget with expenses of $172 million. The second and final reading passed Thursday night with no discussion and no public comment. The Cookeville Regional budget also passed
