One Cookeville City Councilman used a personal tradition to thank voters for their support Thursday.
Councilman Dwight Henry partnered with Dairy Queen and Pops & Lollipops to offer special Oh Henry Blizzards and milkshakes. He said using the candy bar with his campaign has become tradition.
“I ran for student body president at Tennessee Tech in 1973 and had no name recognition,” Henry said. “Then someone said ‘Go to Nashville, get a bunch of Oh Henry bars, start giving them out, and say that’s my name and I’d appreciate your vote.’ It worked then and every time since then that I’ve ran, I’ve used that Oh Henry bar.”
Henry said this isn’t the first time he’s partnered with the Dairy Queen on Spring Street to offer the special Blizzard treats.
“A few campaigns ago, I just saw the Blizzard and I thought ‘I wonder if they can do an Oh Henry Blizzard,'” Henry said. “So I went in and asked Bruce Bean at Dairy Queen and he said ‘you bring us the Oh Henry bars and we’ll make the Blizzards.’ People like it. It’s a good product and it’s a nice way to say thank you.”
Henry said he used a similar campaign when he ran for Tennessee State Representative.
Proceeds for all Blizzards – not just the Oh Henry Blizzards – will help benefit Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital in Nashville as part of the company’s Children’s Miracle Network Day 2018.
Henry fell just short in Thursday’s election for city council and will not serve a second term.
