The Cookeville-Putnam County Animal Shelter stands to receive some $1.2 million.
The unexpected money the bequest from the estate of Mary Ayers, a retired Tennessee Tech University professor who passed away.
“Next is to assess the needs out there and what can be done,” Cookeville City Councilman Dwight Henry said. “We are really proud of that facility. It’s state-of-the-art and this very generous estate grant is going to bring it to a whole new level.”
Thursday night, the Cookeville City Council approved a measure authorizing City Manager Mike Davidson to execute a settlement agreement with the Ayers estate.
City and county officials will soon begin discussions on the best ways to use the money at the animal shelter and how to recognize Mrs. Ayers.
The Putnam County Commission approved the same agreement during its March meeting.
