Cookeville City Council To Consider Next Resurfacing Phase At Cane Creek

Cookeville City Council will consider bidding out the next phase of trail resurfacing at Cane Creek Park.

Leisure Services Director Rick Woods said the first phase of resurfacing was included with work on the north shoreline last year. He said they’ve budgeted money this year to continue repaving.

“Because of the cost increases that we’ve seen in everything recently, we bid this in options,” Woods said. “Because we had $135,000 budgeted, and we’ve spent so far from the previous project $50,801.”

Woods said option one extends across the dam where crews left off with the first phase, and option two would extend Woods said the third option is the most costly because it is the most difficult work having to navigate roots and narrow paths.

Woods said they are recommending the council approve option one at $45,950, falling in the remaining paving budget of $85,000. City Manager James Mills said they had considered doing options one and two with a $20,000 budget amendment but eventually decided against it.

“That section of the park, Blake (Mayo) felt like that the road going through the park the road would be severely damaged by the heavy asphalt trucks coming in there,” Mills said. “(…)What we probably need to do is budget for next year. Everything is going to cost more each year, and I would’ve loved to have gotten it done when we could have.”

Mills said the section over the bridge is probably the oldest section remaining. He said the other areas of the park will all likely have to be resurfaced within the next year or two years.
