The Cookeville Camera Club will hold its annual photography exhibition at the Cookeville Arts Studio beginning next week.
Secretary Stan McReynolds said the show will include over 100 pictures from some 15 members of the club. He said many of the photographers have the skills to produce professional-level work.
“First of all, it gives them the opportunity to sell their work if that’s what their objective is,” McReynolds said. “It also is satisfying for the artist to see what people think of their work. To display it and hear comments or get feedback on what work they do.”
McReynolds said the club has been hosting exhibitions since the early 1970s, but the event has taken off in the past decade. He said now that people can post photography on social media, interest in creating visual art for display has skyrocketed.
“I think we’ve become more and more a visual society,” McReynolds said. “With digital photography, it gives the ability for people to easily display their work electronically online or otherwise. You can mail your photos to your friends and family and I think the ease of making photographs and sharing photographs these days has really added to the enthusiasm for photography.”
The show takes place from April 3 through April 27. On April 6, the club will hold a reception and allow attendees to vote for their favorite photos. McReynolds said winners of the public vote will receive ribbons based on where their photos ranked. He said he hopes attendees leave with a new-found appreciation for the unique art of photography.
He said much of the work that will be on display is less a clear image of the world around us, but rather the creative interpretation of our universe through the lens of an artist.
“We have some very fine photographers here that, using the available processing software, can make some beautiful works of art that really don’t resemble a photograph so much,” McReynolds said. “I’m hoping the public can see the versatility of photography.”
He said he is excited for some of the most talented artists in the community to put their work on display for the enjoyment of Cookeville and beyond.
