Cookeville Approves Submittal Of Assistance To Firefighters Grant Application

Cookeville City Council approved the submittal of an Assistance to Firefighters Grant application.

The grant application will be sent to the Department of Homeland Security and FEMA. Fire Chief Benton Young said that the grant will be used to purchase 50 portable and 12 mobile P-25 compliant radios.

“If awarded the grant would be $53,974 It has a ten percent match which would be $5,397.41”

Young said that the new radios will be compliant with the same communications system that Putnam 911 will upgrade to in the future. He said that the fire department has determined that their current system needs to be replaced, and wants to keep up with the future switch.

In other business, City Council officially accepted the resignation of long-serving Judge David Ledbetter. It also approved the appointment of Special Judge Joy Buck Gothard to finish out Ledbetter’s term which expires July 1, 2023.

“David Ledbetter’s been my mentor in a lot of ways. We’ve had 18 years of a great law practice together. I don’t think I’ll serve as long as he has. When I’m 100, which will happen in less than 42 years, I’ll probably go to the house. I will do my best to try to keep things in the road and try to make you proud.”
