Cookeville Approves $27.6 Million Budget On First Reading

The Cookeville City Council unanimously approved a $27.6 million budget on first reading last night.

The budget did not include a property tax increase. The city’s property tax rate will remain at 84-cents per $100 of assessed value.

“We have one of the lowest property tax rates in the state,” Mayor Ricky Shelton said. “We were able to fund a very healthy capitol budget and our general fund will address a lot of needs for quality of life, transportation, and public safety.”

The budget includes a grant and matching funds for the city’s skate park, designs for a new police station and Bennett Road extension project.

The budget will need to be approved a second time before it takes effect.
