Cookeville ranks as the eighth fastest growing micropolitan area nationwide, according to statistics released by the US Census Bureau.
The bureau defines a micropolitan as an area with at least one urban cluster between 10,000 and 50,000 people. The Cookeville micropolitan includes 111,361 people.
In 2017, Cookeville moved up 12 spots in the top 20 rankings to number eight among rankings based on numeric increases. The community’s population increased 1,660 last year.
“That will peak more interest and people checking us out and finding out what we’re all about,” Cookeville Mayor Ricky Shelton said. “That could be even more growth. There is a lot of people moving to our area.”
Bozeman, MT ranked as the nation’s fast growing micropolitan with an increase of more than 3,700 residents. It is the second straight year for the community at number one. Jefferson, GA and Kalispell, MT ranked second and third.
