Commissioners Rebid Convenience Center

Back to the drawing board on construction of the Piney Convenience Center after Van Buren County Commissioners learned the original size of the building would be too big.

The original size of the building set at 40-by-40 feet. Commissioner Tabitha Denney said she and fellow Commissioner Cale Crain discovered the building size would need to be reduced after visiting the site.

“From post to post entrance to exit is 120 feet,” Denney said. “40 by 40 building is not going to fit how the fence was placed by committee B, so we are going to have to rethink the whole size of the building.”

Crain said the main concern was trucks moving within the tight spaces. The commissioners approved a motion to resize the building to a 36-by-30 foot pole barn and rebid the project.

“It’s going to be too much for people to get in and out,” Crain said. “Mainly the truck driver to get in and out. We got to give him enough space to get in drop containers and maneuver. It’s just going to make it too tight.”

The commissioners discussed if this was the best avenue to take. Crain said resizing the building would be easier than changing the fence.

A concrete slab has already been poured at the convenience center site for the original building size. Crain said the slab should not be affected by the change. Denney said a positive to take away from the change is that a smaller building will not cost as much.
