Cole: Van Buren Distance Learning Plan Ready

Van Buren School Board officials have made headway this week on their distance learning plan for the state.

The plan is due to state officials Friday. School Director Cheryl Cole said she believes the school district is prepared for the upcoming school year.

“I think most everyone was unprepared because it was a totally new thing that happened to us in March,” Cole said. “I do think that we’ve had the summer to plan, even planning from the time we let out in March. We just have a better understanding of what needs to take place.”

Cole said over 20 tool kits from the state were sent to give school board officials better insight to determine the best course of action. The state looks at how the school district will feed students and how they’ll be taken care of academically. Cole said a virtual instruction program is available for any family not comfortable sending their children to school.

“I know attendance will be an issue, not just necessarily for the virtual but also staff attendance and teacher attendance,” Cole said. “If someone there is exposed to someone that has COVID-19, we’ve got to get something in place for that. We’re working on that this week.”
