Clay County is looking to dedicate its Donaldson Park concession stand to long-time park steward Don Sherrell.
Commissioner Timmie Scott said that the park board wanted to do something that would honor someone who put in countless hours to help the community.
“I know I’d go across the bridge and you’d see him down there all by himself on an old grader getting the park ready,” Scott said. “And for several years, he maintained the park. He took care of the park. And he did that voluntarily.”
Scott said that Sherrell was in charge of taking reservations for buildings in the park, looking after the baseball and softball fields, and making sure the park ran smoothly. Scott said that while Sherrell no longer volunteers due to health issues, he’s been an important figure to the park since its inception.
