Clay Schools Hosting Substitute Teacher Trainings

Clay County Schools will host a substitute teacher training session for interested teachers on Friday, October 15th.

Part-time teacher Phyliss Boyce said that the training is the first step towards becoming a substitute teacher in the school system. She said that they cover everything from safety to learning the administration at each school.

“So we need people who are really interested in children,” Boyce said. “And helping them learn who are willing to follow a teacher plan and lesson plans left to them and most of all to be truly, truly dedicated to the school system and to the education of our kids.”

Boyce said that the training sessions are held every nine weeks or so. She said that those interested in attending should register with Rhonda Short of the Board of Education. Those planning on attending will need to bring their driver’s license, a copy of their high school diploma or GED, and social security card. The meeting will take place at 1 p.m. at the Clay Board of Education.

Boyce said that these training sessions are a good way to weed out the right kind of people to be substitutes.

“We don’t need to send just anybody into a classroom,” Boyce said. “And so one of the requirements is they have a background check and fingerprinting done. That helps us cut down on pedophiles, child molesters, people with criminal records. And it’s also a good way to weed out those who think it’s just going to be a trip and easy to do. They have to invest a little bit of money to begin with to get themselves qualified.”

Boyce said that those interested and also have their teaching licenses will be eligible for higher pay and longer-term situations.
